Rovers cast eye over Vogel

07 Mar 2008 - 08:39:37

Blackburn Rovers have handed a trial to experienced Swiss midfielder Johann Vogel.

The 30-year-old international is available on a free transfer after being released by Real Betis following an acrimonious dispute with the Spanish club which ended in December.

The former PSV Eindhoven and AC Milan midfielder had been linked with a move to Everton, but will instead attempt to impress Rovers boss Mark Hughes.

"Johann Vogel has the right pedigree, but his career came to a stop because he had a dispute with his previous club that took six months to untangle," said Hughes.

"I've seen him play many, many times and he is the right quality. But the situation is we have to see if he would be fit enough to make an impact over the rest of this season or whether we should consider it for next season."

Meanwhile, Hughes has also revealed that former Manchester United midfielder Quinton Fortune has also been given the opportunity to resurrect his career at Ewood Park.

The injury-plagued South African was released by Bolton Wanderers last summer and failed to win a contract following a similar trial period with Sunderland towards the end of last year.

"Nothing will be decided in the next couple of weeks on either player," added Hughes.
