    Rovers back UEFA action

    27 Oct 2006 - 08:20:43

Blackburn Rovers have welcomed the five-match ban handed down to Nikola Mijailovic after the Wisla Krakow defender was found guilty of racially abusing Benni McCarthy.

The Serbian defender abused Rovers' South Africa international during and a UEFA Cup game in Poland on October 19 and European football's governing body has taken swift action.

"Firstly, we appreciate UEFA's speed in dealing with this important issue," said a statement from the Ewood Park club.

"Secondly, we believe that UEFA's decision sends out a clear message that racism will not - and should not - be tolerated in the game."

Mijailovic denies the allegations and has until Monday to lodge an appeal.
