Blackburn Rovers chairman John Williams has accepted that defender Lucas Neill will leave the club either in the January transfer window or next summer.
The 28-year-old Australia international has rejected the offer of a new contract from the Ewood Park club and will be able to walk away on a free transfer at the end of the current campaign.
Williams told the Daily Mirror: "Lucas has said he would like to look at fresh challenges.
"The decision is between us and him about whether he leaves in January or at the end of the season.
"It all depends on whether the offer is right for the club and whether Lucas wants to leave in January. We will do what is best for the team."
Neill joined Rovers in the summer of 2001 from Millwall and has gone on to score seven goals in 217 first-team appearances for the Lancashire club.
