Blackburn Rovers midfielder Steven Reid has been ruled out for the rest of the season after sustaining a serious knee injury in training.
The 25-year-old Republic of Ireland international has been sidelined since September with a back problem, but had been nearing a return to action before his latest setback.
Reid has sustained cruciate ligament damage and could face as long as six months on the sidelines.
Rovers chief executive John Williams told the club's official website: "We are desperately sorry for the lad.
"He has worked so hard to get back to full fitness after his back injury and was close to making a return to action."
Reid moved to Ewood Park in the summer of 2003 for £2.5million from Millwall and has scored seven goals in 95 appearances for the club.
