Blackburn Rovers will be without key defender Ryan Nelsen until Christmas after the centre-half underwent surgery on a hamstring injury.
The 28-year-old New Zealand international had been expected to be sidelined for a couple of weeks, but now faces an extended spell out of action after going under the knife.
Rovers boss Mark Hughes confirmed: "Ryan Nelsen has had an operation today.
"He is going to be out for around three months, so we'll probably get him back around Christmas. That's the way we are viewing it.
"It's unfortunate, but it needed to be done and when he returns he will be like a new player for us.
"We had the best guy in the world performing the operation. He saw the problem, rectified it, and was very happy with the way surgery went.
"Hopefully, Ryan will recover quickly."
