Kean: Olsson could make United trip
Blackburn manager Steve Kean has revealed Martin Olsson has an "outside chance" of recovering from a hamstring injury in time to face Manchester United at Old Trafford on New Year's Eve.
Rovers have a chronic injury list, which leaves 10 senior players either doubtful or definitely missing. Midfielders David Dunn and Junior Hoilett will both be assessed before Kean can make a decision on their respective hamstring injuries, whilst Olsson is also closing in on a return.
"Martin has an outside chance," said Kean. "It is a matter of making sure he can play to the normal explosive nature of his game. Last time he came back too quickly and this time we want him available for a number of games."
Meanwhile, Kean revealed there will be talks with the club's owners, Venky's, over a potential budget for the January transfer window.
Rovers this week posted annual losses of £18.3million, which increased the club's overall debt to £26.3million.
With 86.6% of Blackburn's income going out in wages, there would appear to be pressure to cut costs rather than increase them. However, there has been an assurance money will be found to assist with a relegation fight and Kean is optimistic Venky's will deliver.
"I am very optimistic we will get funds," said the Scot. "The financial side of the club is dealt with by the financial directors and the people that crunch the numbers.
"Hopefully they can come back in the next few days and say that we can be active at a good level. Obviously there is money that has come into the club, none more so than Phil Jones going to Manchester United.
"We would like to think we can keep the majority of the squad together. There will be interest on players, like there is in every window. But we want to keep the squad together and build on it and make sure we can add faces and not take them away.
"That is going to be very important for the next two or three years. We want to keep as many of the young players that we can."
