Hughes: Benni a bargain
05 Mar 2007 - 07:50:29
Blackburn Rovers manager Mark Hughes was full of praise for striker Benni McCarthy after his penalty double secured a 2-1 derby victory at Bolton Wanderers.
The summer signing from FC Porto took his tally for the season to 18, with Hughes feeling that he has bagged a bargain in the South Africa star.
He said: "The value that we have got from Benni is certainly more than the £2.5million that we paid for him.
"He's had a great season and I thought he was excellent again. I thought that his movement and his willingness to get the job done for the team was first-class.
"He's been out of the team for a couple of games because I felt that he needed a break, but he looked fresh and full of running and I'm delighted he got the two goals.
"I would never take penalties. You have got to have that belief and it is difficult to do it in a game where emotions are running high and the adrenaline is flowing.
"Benni grabbed the ball and he wasn't going to allow anyone else to take them. You need mental strength, courage and belief in your own ability to do that."
