Blackburn Rovers defender Stephane Henchoz will miss the Premiership clash at Reading after having his appeal against the red card he was handed against Newcastle United on Saturday rejected by the FA.
The Swiss defender was dismissed when he hauled down Magpies striker Obafemi Martins and, although the incident occurred near the touchline, referee Dermot Gallagher ruled that Henchoz had denied an obvious goalscoring opportunity.
A statement on the FA's official website read: "At a Disciplinary Commission hearing today (Tuesday), Blackburn Rovers' Stephane Henchoz had a claim for wrongful dismissal rejected.
"Henchoz was sent off for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity against Newcastle United on December 9, and will serve a one-match suspension with immediate effect."
Rovers boss Mark Hughes had said of the incident after his side's 3-1 defeat: "At worst it's a foul, but certainly not a sending-off offence.
"He's won the initial header and then just fallen on him. He wasn't last man and he was 40 yards away from goal. We will absolutely appeal it.
"We're not going to make excuses, but there's been big decisions that haven't gone for us, which have had a direct impact on the result of the game."
