Fitness regime boosts Brown
04 Mar 2009 - 11:40:55
Blackburn Rovers boss Sam Allardyce believes that back-up goalkeeper Jason Brown has benefited from a recent improved fitness regime.
The 26-year-old has had to settle for a place on the bench for most of his Rovers career, but played in the 1-0 FA Cup fifth round replay loss at Coventry City.
He was also called on during the 2-1 victory at Hull City and will start against Everton as Paul Robinson is sidelined by a shoulder injury.
Allardyce told the Blackburn Citizen: "I think Jason needed to get a little fitter and concentrate not just on goalkeeping work.
"His all-round fitness needed work, which generally sneaks into a lot of players who become squad players.
"The player sits on the bench, you travel back and you have to get the training in where you can get it and sometimes from a staff point of view that is let slip.
"It has involved a lot of extra work, a mini pre-season to get the fitness back into that individual. Jason has got fitter and then we have given him a chance at Coventry.
"It has stood us in good stead because when we needed him at a crucial stage, he has not come on with any doubts and has done the job for us."
