Blackburn Rovers 3 Wolverhampton Wanderers 1: match report

After five hours without a goal in front of their own fans, Blackburn finally produced the kind of display associated with Sam Allardyce as they swept past newly-promoted Wolves. Although Allardyce has improved his new team considerably since taking charge in December last year, they had managed just one goal in the Premier League this season before yesterday. That miserable run ended when El-Hadji Diouf capitalised on a poor pass from Karl Henry to carry the ball through Michael Mancienne’s desperate challenge and guide it through Wayne Hennessey’s legs for a first goal at Ewood Park in five hours and 21 minutes. Mick McCarthy was moved to bring on his powerful new Austrian forward Stefan Maierhofer at the break but there was to be no reversing Blackburn’s dominance. From David Dunn’s corner, Mancienne failed to track Gäel Givet’s run and the Frenchman’s header deflected off Jason Roberts’ chest and into the corner of the net. Just after the hour, Blackburn added a third with a move of real quality as Morten Gamst Pedersen’s diagonal ball sent Roberts through on goal only to make a mess of his shot, before Dunn tapped in from two yards out. Even Maierhofer’s late consolation, a scrambled effort from a corner, failed to dampen the mood in Lancashire.
