    Benni impact impresses Ince

    26 Oct 2008 - 13:45:08

Blackburn Rovers boss Paul Ince is hopeful that Benni McCarthy's last-gasp goal in the 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough will be the first of many this season.

The 30-year-old South Africa international has failed to make his mark this season, having struggled for both form and fitness, but came on as a sub against Boro to break his duck for the campaign.

Ince commented: "Benni is a great goalscorer and I'm delighted for him. I've always said a fit and hungry Benni McCarthy will always be in my side and he's getting there now.

"He looks sharper after going away and having a couple of games with South Africa and he's a fantastic guy - he's always smiling and he does try hard.

"I have always said if he gets himself right, which he is starting to do now, he will be a great addition to the squad."

Rovers number two Ray Mathias added: "I think when people go out and work hard and don't get a go in the first team they get disillusioned.

"Maybe Benni did that and lost his way a little bit, but he has come back fighting and hopefully we have got him back to his best.

"He has worked tremendously hard on the training ground, but only performances on the pitch will show how close he is to regaining his form."
