Benjani Mwaruwari joins up with Blackburn

28 Aug 2010 - 12:35:12

Blackburn Rovers have signed former Manchester City striker Benjani Mwaruwari on a one-year contract.

The Zimbabwe striker had been training with the Lancashire club after being released by City at the end of last season.

The 32-year-old former Auxerre, Portsmouth and Sunderland striker has done enough during his time at the club to persuade Rovers boss Sam Allardyce that he deserves a contract.

Speaking before Benjani officially signed, Allardyce explained: "We are trying to sign him on a contract because of his wealth of experience.

"He has trained with us a few days. He has shown us enough that we think he will be okay to play for us in the Premier League, so we are trying to sort something out."

Benjani began his career in the Premier League with two seasons at Portsmouth.

He moved on to City in 2008 but found himself well down the pecking order following the cash injection and influx of new players following the takeover of the club by billionaire new owners from Abu Dhabi.

The striker was sent out on loan to Sunderland during the closing months of the last campaign but failed to find the net.
