Allardyce cool over striker move
23 Aug 2010 - 11:45:20
Sam Allardyce has warned Blackburn Rovers fans not to expect the arrival of a new striker before the transfer window closes next week.
Rovers lost 2-1 at Birmingham City on Saturday and afterwards the Rovers boss lamented his team's lack of cutting edge.
But although admitting a need for a new frontman, Allardyce has suggested he may not sign anybody before the window closes on August 31.
"We are trying but I wouldn't say we are close to anything at the moment," he told the Lancashire Evening Telegraph.
"There is a limited number of frontmen who are available and we have to find out whether we consider them good enough to come into this league and produce the goals we need.
Even if Allardyce does bolster his attacking options, he doesn't expect any new arrival at Ewood Park to make an immediate impact.
Bulgarian striker Ivelin Popov has emerged as a possible target for the Lancashire club.
He warned: "Anybody we get now is going to take a considerable amount of time to adjust to the Premier League anyway because it is going to be from abroad no doubt.
"I don't think we are going to find anyone from this country, so it will take us until the best part of Christmas to get them up to being able to play in the Premier League, so we have to go with the lads we have got."
