Allardyce: We missed chance
15 Feb 2009 - 10:23:36
Blackburn Rovers manager Sam Allardyce claimed Saturday's FA Cup fifth round draw with Coventry City was a missed opportunity.
Rovers had led 1-0 at Ewood Park courtesy of Roque Santa Cruz's second minute opener, but had a last-gasp Christopher Samba header to thank for being in the hat for the quarter-finals after conceding two goals to the Championship side.
Afterwards, Allardyce was unhappy at the prospect of a replay and admitted he was concerned with the recent defensive displays of his side.
He said: "In the end I've got no problems with the result - my problem is with not seeing teams off when we've got the opportunity.
"We have also started to concede too many goals at home. We conceded two against Manchester City, two against Bolton and another two here today.
"And our other Achilles heel at the moment is not seeing teams off.
"Because we were only 1-0 up at half-time, Coventry were bound to take chances in the FA Cup going into the second half."
Allardyce was also annoyed that a second-half effort from Gael Givet was ruled out by the referee for a foul.
"They've scored a good goal, but we've scored a perfectly good goal almost straight after and for some unknown reason it's been disallowed," he claimed.
"I'm absolutely certain it's not a foul (by Givet), otherwise you would have hundreds of free-kicks awarded like that in every game.
"They then got the deflection which put them ahead and we've pulled it back in the last minute when it looked like a defeat."
