Rams close on done Deeney deal

Derby manager Nigel Clough expects to secure the signing of Saul Deeney within the next seven days, but is still waiting on a reply regarding Frank Fielding. The Rams are eager to secure goalkeeping cover for Stephen Bywater in order to allow back-up option Roy Carroll the chance to seek a return to the Premier League. Clough has therefore raided former club Burton Albion for Deeney and the shot-stopper is soon expected to pen a deal at Pride Park after a pre-season trial. But Championship outfit Derby have yet to hear from Blackburn after bidding for the Premier League side's 21-year-old goalkeeper Fielding last week. No change "There is no change on Fielding but Saul we will get signed up this week," Clough told the Derby Evening Telegraph. "So if nothing happens, we will go with Stephen Bywater and Saul in the first game." Meanwhile, Clough has yet to make a move for Crewe right-back John Brayford. He added when asked about Brayford: "We are still waiting on a couple of departures which may well trigger us. "But we are also awaiting a decision on two loan players coming in, two young players on long-term loans. We hope to get at least one of those."
