Pompey outclassed by Blackburn

Sam Allardyce saw his Blackburn side surely secure their top-flight status with a 2-0 victory over Portsmouth at Ewood Park. He has always believed 40 points would be enough to stay up and they achieved that mark by overcoming Portsmouth. Goals from Morten Gamst Pedersen and Benni McCarthy (penalty) in each half saw Blackburn maintain their good home record. They have lost only one of 10 Barclays Premier League games on their own patch since Allardyce arrived as manager in December. After a strong start, Blackburn took the lead with 31 minutes gone when David James was beaten to a cross by Christopher Samba and the ball fell to Pedersen who forced it home for his first goal of the season. The hosts continued to impress and extended their lead just before the hour when McCarthy scored from the spot after a Hermann Hreidarsson handball before John Utaka fired a penalty over for Portsmouth with three minutes to go after a Keith Andrews handball.
