A Blackburn Rovers fan has died after being critically injured during Saturday's Premier League game at Stoke City.

The unnamed supporter was found unconscious in a stand concourse at the Britannia Stadium just after half-time in the match.

Police have confirmed that a 25-year-old man from Preston remains in custody after being arrested at the time and also revealed that no home supporters were involved in the incident during their side's 3-0 victory.

The supporter was treated at the scene for a head injury and cardiac arrest before being taken to hospital where he later died.

"A 30-year-old man was pronounced dead at 1.55am this morning at University Hospital North Staffordshire," confirmed a police spokesperson.

"The circumstances are being fully investigated and a 25-year-old man remains in custody and is helping police with their inquiries."

Both clubs are conducting investigations into the incident and will make no further comment while the police continue their own inquiries.
