Penney hopes for Blackman return

Oldham boss Dave Penney is hoping to have on-loan Blackburn striker Nick Blackman available when his side make the trip to Southend. The 19-year-old has been nursing a foot injury but tests have revealed no serious damage and he is now on the road to recovery. But striker Deane Smalley needs an operation to repair a damaged disc in his back while fellow frontman Lewis Alessandra was set to go under the knife this week for damaged ankle ligaments. Pawel Abbott needs a hernia operation but that looks likely to be delayed until Penney has more of his strikers available. Midfielder Jon Worthington could again be missing due to an ankle injury while Joe Jacobson and Rob Purdie have yet to feature this season due to injury and remain sidelined.
