McCarthy hails 'phenomenal' Rovers

Benni McCarthy hailed a "phenomenal" display by Blackburn as they pulled themselves six points clear of the drop with a 2-0 win over Wigan.Goals from McCarthy and captain Ryan Nelsen - his first for the club - gave Rovers the three points and sent them into 15th place."It was phenomenal today," McCarthy told Sky Sports 1. "We came out from the start flying, we did what we were expected to do."It's just a shame we always leave it late and we're in the situation we are now."Hopefully this can motivate us for the next couple of games so we can get it off our minds and we won't have to rely on everyone else."McCarthy said he was enjoying his unusual partnership with makeshift striker Christopher Samba. He said: "It's weird but very nice because with his height he does distract a lot of the defenders and he takes all the attention and make you play with a bit of ease."He's been fantastic and the boys have been calling him Drogba, Kanu and Adebayor."He plays striker in training and he does all these fancy things and he seems to pull it off."Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce was also impressed by Samba's performance. "He's a got a lot more quality on the deck than people give him credit for," he told Sky Sports 1."He's played up there a few times and he's getting more and more used to it - when to flick it on, when to bring it down, bring other people into the game."It takes two men to look after him and it gives you space elsewhere for others to exploit."He added: "It's a well earned three points at both ends today - some heroic defending and goalkeeping and then we had some quality balls in the box and put them under pressure."We didn't have the goalscorers available but we got the goals we needed."It was a great result, even though at times it was a little fraught in terms of our defending, but we got it right and it's a fantastic win for us."We've been clawing ourselves out ever since I came here. That's 24 points from 17 games now. In equation terms if you got that over the season that's a top-half finish."Wigan manager Steve Bruce added: "I couldn't think anyone who watched the game would say we didn't show a bit of commitment and a bit of energy."(But) I think if we'd played until midnight we wouldn't have scored today. Very frustrating."[LNB]
