Goals from McCarthy and captain Ryan Nelsen - his first for the club - gave Rovers the three points and sent them into 15th place.[LNB]"It was phenomenal today," McCarthy told Sky Sports 1. "We came out from the start flying, we did what we were expected to do.[LNB]"It's just a shame we always leave it late and we're in the situation we are now.[LNB]"Hopefully this can motivate us for the next couple of games so we can get it off our minds and we won't have to rely on everyone else."[LNB]McCarthy said he was enjoying his unusual partnership with makeshift striker Christopher Samba.[LNB]He said: "It's weird but very nice because with his height he does distract a lot of the defenders and he takes all the attention and make you play with a bit of ease.[LNB]"He's been fantastic and the boys have been calling him Drogba, Kanu and Adebayor.[LNB]"He plays striker in training and he does all these fancy things and he seems to pull it off."[LNB]Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce was also impressed by Samba's performance. "He's a got a lot more quality on the deck than people give him credit for," he told Sky Sports 1.[LNB]"He's played up there a few times and he's getting more and more used to it - when to flick it on, when to bring it down, bring other people into the game.[LNB]"It takes two men to look after him and it gives you space elsewhere for others to exploit."[LNB]He added: "It's a well earned three points at both ends today - some heroic defending and goalkeeping and then we had some quality balls in the box and put them under pressure.[LNB]"We didn't have the goalscorers available but we got the goals we needed.[LNB]"It was a great result, even though at times it was a little fraught in terms of our defending, but we got it right and it's a fantastic win for us.[LNB]"We've been clawing ourselves out ever since I came here. That's 24 points from 17 games now. In equation terms if you got that over the season that's a top-half finish."[LNB]Wigan manager Steve Bruce added: "I couldn't think anyone who watched the game would say we didn't show a bit of commitment and a bit of energy.[LNB]"(But) I think if we'd played until midnight we wouldn't have scored today. Very frustrating."[LNB][LNB]
