McCarthy calls for quality

Benni McCarthy knows Blackburn will have to dip into the transfer market in a bid to bring more 'quality' to the club's forward line. The South African striker has seen star man Roque Santa Cruz depart for Manchester City in an £18million deal, while Matt Derbyshire has made his move to Olympiakos permanent. Rovers boss Sam Allardyce has been scouring the market looking for alternatives, but is yet to bring in a replacement. And McCarthy admits it is essential to add to the pool of options at Ewood Park which also contains Jason Roberts and Paul Gallagher. "We need extra and that little bit more quality to raise our game," he told the Lancashire Telegraph. "I know my strength and Jason Roberts knows his strength and we know we really complement each other. "Maybe the manager will pick me for some games because of what I have over Jason and in other games maybe he will pick Jason for what he has over me. "We don't have that player that has the qualities of both of us. That is what we had with Roque. "Roque had what I could do and what Jason could do and that is why he was the ideal striker." Allardyce has given up on his attempts to bring Ruud van Nistelrooy back to the Premier League from Real Madrid and has been priced out of a move for Peter Crouch. He missed Blackburn's 1-1 pre-season friendly draw against Leeds United at Elland Road to scout Russia striker Pavel Pogrebnyak in action for Zenit St Petersburg. A loan deal for Chelsea's Argentinian Franco di Santo has been mooted, although Stamford Bridge boss Carlo Ancelotti was impressed with the player's performances on the recent tour of America. McCarthy added: "With a bit of luck we can get that again. I don't know who but I would be glad to get a good name player to bring something new to the team - and a lot of goals. "If we can get one more quality striker and if it means one of us has to sacrifice then we would rather that as long as we win games and keep ourselves in the top half of the league."
