I want to carry on: Shearer looking to stay, even if Toon are relegated

Alan Shearer wants to remain Newcastle United's manager beyond the end of this season - even if they are relegated from the Barclays Premier League. The Geordie favourite still needs certain assurances from club owner Mike Ashley before signing a long-term contract. But even after taking two points from his first five games in charge, Shearer is enjoying the job so much he has told friends he wants to stay and rebuild the troubled club. While Ashley still has to resolve the situation with Joe Kinnear, who has been unable to work since February after undergoing heart bypass surgery, he is desperate for Shearer to remain at St James' Park and trusts him to guide the club back to the top flight should they go down. Shearer's actions already suggest he is planning for the long-term. He has made changes to the backroom staff, brought in his own medical specialists and introduced a set of rules and regulations he expects the players to follow.
