North End opened the scoring when Hayes headed home Callum Davidson's cross after 19 minutes. The summer signing from Scunthorpe continued to trouble the visiting defence and doubled his tally on the stroke of half-time when he got on the end of Keith Treacy's free-kick to head home. Chris Brown put the result beyond doubt with a 56th-minute penalty following an incident in the box between Michel Salgado and Sean St Ledger.
Crewe 1-0 West Brom
West Brom slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Crewe. Calvin Zola wasted two early chances for the hosts before the Baggies' Lateef Elford-Alliyu went close to a first-half breakthrough, heading Reuben Reid's cross against the bar. But Luke Murphy scored the only goal for Alex after being picked out in the penalty area by full-back Matt Tootle.
Bury 4-0 Leeds United
Andy Bishop struck twice as Bury claimed a surprise 4-0 friendly win over Leeds at Gigg Lane. Leeds, who were without Billy Paynter, Richard Naylor, Jason Crowe, Lloyd Sam and Alan Martin, did have the ball in the net after nine minutes but play was called back for an infringement. But it was Bury who took the lead after 36 minutes when Ryan Lowe fired a shot into the top corner before fellow Danny Carlton poked forward for Bishop to take two touches and fire the ball home after 65 minutes. Carlton then got himself on the scoresheet when he fired home from Danny Hudson's pass five minutes from time. Bishop added his second in the final minute from the penalty spot.

Rotherham 1-2 Leicester (match abandoned)
Paulo Sousa's first game in charge of Leicester on English soil ended in farce as their pre-season friendly with Rotherham was abandoned due to floodlight failure in the 81st minute. The Foxes were leading the League Two outfit 2-1 when darkness fell on the pitch in the late stages of the game and the two sides agreed to call off proceedings soon after. Sousa, who was appointed as Nigel Pearson's replacement last month, led his new side on a tour of Slovenia last week but took his team to Don Valley for their first public outing in this country.
Paul Gallagher gave the Foxes an early lead when he swept home from close range but Rotherham levelled when Adam Le Fondre converted from the penalty spot. But Leicester grabbed a second after the break when DJ Campbell fired home with a low shot. Sousa made just one change to the side that beat Slovenian side NK Aluminij, with Gallagher coming in for Matt Oakley, while new signing Tom Kennedy was given another run-out at left-back. The Foxes continue their preparations for the forthcoming season when they travel to Oxford on Saturday.
Oldham 1-1 Wigan
A superb strike from Dale Stephens helped Oldham to a 1-1 draw against Premier League side Wigan. The midfielder latched onto a cross from Ritchie Jones before scoring with a low volley from the edge of the area after 15 minutes. Wigan, who gave a debut to Mauro Boselli, hit back within two minutes of the restart when Jordi Gomez fired home from the spot after being fouled by Paul Black in the box. Oldham's player/manager Paul Dickov entered the action after 73 minutes and soon alerted the attentions of the referee following a tough challenge on Mohamed Diame.
NK Celje 1-0 Reading
Reading suffered a 1-0 defeat to 10-man NK Celje in the final friendly of their pre-season training camp in Slovenia. The Royals, without strikers Grzegorz Rasiak and Noel Hunt through injury, enjoyed the better of the chances in the first half with Jobi McAnuff and Alex Pearce going close. But Gorazd Zajc gave the home side the lead with a neat finish past Ben Hamer before Dragutin Golob was sent off for two fouls on Hal Robson-Kanu.
Darlington 1-1 Sheffield Wednesday
Summer signing Paul Heffernan helped Sheffield Wednesday come from behind to earn a 1-1 draw with Darlington at the Northern Echo Arena. The Conference side opened the scoring early in the second half when Paul Arnison converted from the penalty spot after Lewis Buxton was penalised for a foul on Curtis Main. But Heffernan levelled in the 63rd minute for the Owls, who are still searching for their first win of their pre-season campaign.
