David James was last night ruled out of England's summer World Cup games to hand Fabio Capello a goalkeeping crisis. Portsmouth No 1 James, 38, missed last night's 3-1 win over Sunderland because of a neck injury and now needs surgery on a shoulder problem. With Manchester United's Ben Foster having had an operation on his right thumb, England boss Capello may have to recall Paul Robinson or plump for Robert Green against Kazakhstan and Andorra. Wigan's Chris Kirkland is currently unfit and Scott Carson missed West Bromwich's last two games after cutting a hand in a training accident. West Ham's Green won only his second cap as a substitute in the 2-0 friendly defeat in Spain three months ago. Robinson has revived his form since joining Blackburn last summer from Spurs, having lost his England No 1 spot to James after making mistakes during Steve McClaren's reign. Pompey boss Paul Hart said: 'David woke up with a stiff neck. We tried to treat it, butit was still pretty sore at 5pm so we decided not to risk it. 'He's had a long-standing shoulder injury that needs to be corrected and he goes intohospital on Wednesday to get that sorted out. If he goes in now, we hope he'll be fit forthe start of the season. 'David's a very strong-minded person. He's made a decision so he's fit for next season. It has to be done and there has to be a sacrifice for that.' James, who was an ever-present in the Premier League this season before theinjury, said: 'It's something I've been playing with for 18 months but I have to look atthe bigger picture now. I want to be fit for the start of the season with Portsmouth and I trust England to do well without me.'
