Blackburn defender Chimbonda lands six-month driving ban for speeding

Pascal Chimbonda has been banned from driving for six months after he was found guilty of speeding. The Blackburn Rovers full-back, from Loughton, Essex, was clocked speeding on the A1 near Newark, Nottinghamshire, in October 2008 and again on the A19 near Thirsk, North Yorkshire, in January this year.

Northallerton Magistrates Court was told that under the "totting up" rules he had more than 12 points on his licence and was over the threshold for a driving ban. Chimbonda, 30, who did not appear in court and was not legally represented, will also have to pay £2,185 in fines and court costs for the two offences. The France international was caught speeding at 82mph in a 70mph zone in a black Cadillac saloon car on the A1 near Newark on October 7 last year.

He initially pleaded not guilty to the offence at Grantham Magistrates' Court, but the offence was later dealt with by Northallerton Magistrates' Court. The court was also told he was caught speeding at 91mph in a 70mph zone in his Porsche Cayenne in January this year on the A19 near Thirsk. Chimbonda was due to be sentenced for that matter earlier this month but the case was adjourned at his request.

Magistrates have been told the player's previous driving offences include failing to provide information as to the keeper of a vehicle and having no insurance. The case had been adjourned twice before because Chimbonda questioned the conviction for having no insurance.

However, magistrates were told that progress had not been made in the case, so they decided to deal with both the new speeding matters in his absence. Magistrate Sheila Jefferson said: "He was warned he was likely to be disqualified." Chimbonda signed for Rovers from Tottenham Hotspur on a two-year deal in August.
