    Taylor pens new Blues contract

    22 May 2010 - 12:13:37

Veteran goalkeeper Maik Taylor will play on for another season after being handed a new one-year contract by Birmingham City.

Taylor, 38, made just two Premier League appearances for the Blues this season following the arrival of Joe Hart on a year-long loan from Manchester City.

Friday's £6million capture of Ben Foster from Manchester United is likely to leave Taylor on the bench next season but Blues boss Alex McLeish jumped at the chance to retain the Northern Ireland international.

"Maik has accepted a new deal," explained McLeish. "I can see him becoming a future coach.

"He is nearing the age of 40 but like David James he is in superb condition.

"I need Maik to drive Ben and he still has the hunger. I'm sure that he'll still be in Northern Ireland's thoughts which will keep him on his toes."

Meanwhile, the Blues will also offer a new contract to midfielder Keith Fahey after a season where he made 39 first-team appearances.
