Shoulder surgery for Davies

Aston Villa expect Curtis Davies to be absent for a "fairly lengthy time" after the defender underwent surgery on a shoulder injury.

Davies dislocated his shoulder three times in four weeks - the final time coming in last month's Europa League clash with Rapid Vienna - and specialists advised that the only course of action was surgery.

"The operation went well and it was reasonably routine. He will obviously now be out for a fairly lengthy time," manager Martin O'Neill told the club's official website.

"There is no exact timescale but these things usually clear up in four months plus."

Davies' injury problems date back to his time with former club Luton Town and led O'Neill to sign two new central defenders on transfer deadline day.

Richard Dunne and James Collins joined the Midlands club before the transfer window closed on September 1.
