McLeish vows to end gloom

McLeish vows to end gloom
Monday Apr 28 2008 13:54

Birmingham City manager Alex McLeish insists his side can finally banish their away-day blues by winning at relegation rivals Fulham on Saturday.

City threw away a two-goal lead against Liverpool at the weekend, eventually having to settle for a point from a 2-2 draw, and remain in the bottom three as a result.

McLeish's side have lost 13 of their 18 Premier League away games so far, but the former Scotland manager said: "We said a few weeks ago that there were a few cup finals ahead but the next one is very important for us.

"At the end of the day, Birmingham City will win an away game in the future and we plan that to be this Saturday.

"We're due, and we've done it before, although not as much as we'd have liked. Hence the position we're in.

"We are where we are. We've got similar away records to the teams about us.

"That's why we're all fighting this relegation scrap because a lot of us don't have the capacity to win away, the mentality or the experience, and we're always searching for a wee bit more quality.

"But we'll win an away game in the future and it's our intention to do that this weekend.

"If this team stay in the Premier League, it will be a fantastic achievement, as good as West Brom coming up or anyone in the Championship coming up.

"People at the beginning of the season thought we'd end up getting relegated. If we can prove that wrong, it will be fantastic."
