McLeish hints at Bale swoop

Birmingham City manager Alex McLeish has confirmed that he is interested in bringing Tottenham defender Gareth Bale to St Andrew's.

Spurs are believed to be willing to let the Wales international leave north London this summer after the 19-year-old struggled to impress in his two seasons at White Hart Lane following his big-money transfer from Southampton.

"Gareth Bale is another name we'd have to consider if he was available," McLeish told Sky Sports News.

The former Rangers manager is happy with the transfer business he has conducted so far this summer though, adding: "We've certainly shown a bit of ambition with the money splashed out on the young centre-halves.

"With Christian Benitez coming in as well, for what was decent money, I couldn't say I've not been given support by the board - that would be ridiculous."
