Carr wants Blues summer spend

Birmingham City captain Stephen Carr believes the St Andrew's-based club must splash the cash and improve their squad in the summer if they are to consolidate their top-half status in the Premier League.

Following last season's Championship promotion, the Blues have exceeded all expectations by clambering into a lofty ninth position to date.

A 12-game unbeaten sequence in the middle of the campaign surprised many and this has significantly guided them into a comfortable placing, but Carr thinks it will be more difficult to follow this season's efforts up during the 2010/11 edition.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail, he said: "No-one has ever got carried away with this season.

"The players don't really need the manager to tell them, because we know. Next season is the real test. People will know us a bit more as a team and adapt more to how we play. So it will be a big test. The second season always is.

"But we've got a good balance about us, and no-one is thinking about not wanting to push on and put the work in again."
