Steve Bruce was proud of his Birmingham City side's efforts, despite them going down to a 1-0 defeat at home to Manchester United at the weekend.
Former Red Devils stalwart Bruce saw the Blues create a number of chances against the reigning Premier League champions, before being undone by a Cristiano Ronaldo strike early in the second half.
Bruce told the club's official website: "We gave a terrific performance, especially in the first half and we needed to take one of those chances. To create four or five in the first half against the champions was terrific.
"The sad thing for me is we made a horrible mistake for their goal and got punished. To lose like that was cruel.
"It was an individual error, but I was proud of the way we played and we could have taken something from the game.
"We defended really well against some top players, so to lose the game because of a mistake like that was cruel.
"We couldn't have done any more apart from take one of the chances and that's the frustrating thing."
