Blues sign Steven Caldwell
irmingham have signed former Wigan central defender Steven Caldwell on a free transfer. The 30-year-old Scot, who made a total of 15 appearances for the Latics last season, becomes Blues' fifth Bosman signing of the summer following Marlon King, Chris Burke, Morgaro Gomis and Adam Rooney. Recently-appointed City boss Chris Hughton is having to work within tight financial constraints as he looks to build a squad capable of an immediate return to the Premier League. Although, with further faces tipped to follow Craig Gardner out of the door at St Andrew's, Hughton may yet get funds to strengthen his squad with a host of players having been released by the club at the end of last term. Caldwell arrives from the DW Stadium where he linked up with brother Gary on a one-year deal having previously played for Burnley, Sunderland and Newcastle - earning promotion to the top flight with both the Clarets in 2009 and Black Cats in 2005.
