Birmingham City have made a surprise move into the transfer market to sign Brentford's FA Cup hero Dudley DJ Campbell for an initial fee of £500,000.

The 24-year-old striker has signed a three-and-a-half year contract at St Andrew's, while the deal could eventually be worth £1million to the League One outfit.

Campbell grabbed the headlines at the weekend with a matchwinning double in the 2-1 victory over Sunderland, while he has also netted nine league goals since his summer arrival at Griffin Park from Yeading.

Blues boss Steve Bruce told the club's official website: "He is somebody that we have been watching for a few weeks now and he has scored in every game.

"He is a bit raw but he has got a good eye for goal and he's exciting. He is sharp, quick, direct and lively and he's only young, so he's got that hunger in his belly.

"Of course it's a gamble. Can he make the step up? We believe that he can.

"Of course we have done our homework about him, but the most important thing is his ability and that is what attracted us."
