Bit-part role suits Phillips
15 Sep 2009 - 12:00:29
Veteran Birmingham City striker Kevin Phillips is content to be a peripheral member of Alex McLeish's first-team squad this season.
The 36-year-old has started just one Premier League match so far this season, the goalless draw with Stoke City, and was a substitute in Sunday's derby defeat to Aston Villa.
Such a role suits Phillips though, who said: "I've started one game and been on the bench for the rest. It's always frustrating to be sitting on the bench but I knew that was going to happen this year.
"I can't see it changing from now until the end of the season. It's up to me that when I get my chance I try and help the team win games.
"That's why the manager's put me on the bench, to come on to make an impact and score late goals. If I do come on then I'll be trying my hardest."
Meanwhile, Gary McSheffrey continues to be linked with a loan move to Sheffield United.
