New Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez has made Jordi Gomez his first signing. The 24-year-old, who spent last season working with Martinez on loan at Swansea, is signing on a four-year contract after a £1.7million was agreed with Espanyol. The Spanish midfielder was also linked to Birmingham and Celtic after impressing as Swansea just missed out on a play-off spot in the Championship last season. But sources in Spain say Gomez has opted to team up again with Martinez at the DW Stadium. Gomez signed a new deal an extended deal at Espanyol last season but the Spanish club were satisfied with the offer from Wigan. The Catalan came through the Barcelona youth team and later played in the B team before moving across town to Espanyol two years ago.
