Too early for Bowyer contract talks

Alex McLeish has said that he has no intention yet of holding contract talks with Lee Bowyer. The 33-year-old Blues midfielder, who's present deal runs out next summer, scored the winning goal in the 1-0 home win against Chelsea but really only started the game at St Andrews because Craig Gardner had been ruled out through injury. McLeish told Press Association Sport: "It's too early to be talking about contracts just now. "I know that Lee and guys of his ilk whose contracts are up will have to plan for themselves. We just want to keep the players motivated and fighting to stay in the team." The Blues boss added: "We did have some talks with Lee in the summer but it never quite worked out and we never quite got to an agreement. "The gauntlet is there for him to keep producing what he has done over the last couple of years - and to do what he did last week."
