Merrick thrilled with Blues gesture
The former goalkeeper becomes the first Blues player to have a stand at St Andrew's renamed in his honour after it was revealed it would become 'the Gil Merrick Stand' in time for the new season.
He told the club's official website: "I am very proud, I never expected it and it was a wonderful surprise.
"It is marvellous for me and my family. I feel very humble and it's a wonderful gesture from the club."
Meanwhile, Blues have offered 18-year-old centre-back David Joyce a six-month professional contract.
