McLeish eyeing midfield 'quality'

McLeish has been among the busiest bosses in the transfer window to date, adding the likes of Scott Dann, Roger Johnson and Christian Benitez to his squad. He has also completed a permanent deal for Lee Bowyer after the former West Ham midfielder impressed on loan at St Andrews last season. But while McLeish is grateful for the money he has been given to spend by the Blues board, he hopes to be handed some more to bring in a top-class midfielder. "The directors gave me money for young centre-halves, more than I expected for that position, so well done from that point of view," McLeish told Sky Sports News. "We know, and I know, we're not strong enough to meet the challenge in the Premier League without the addition of maybe a real quality midfielder, or dare I say it, two midfielders." Rangers' Barry Ferguson, Inter Milan's Patrick Vieira and Newcastle's Joey Barton are among the players to be linked with Birmingham, but McLeish did not wish to be drawn on his targets. He added: "I never speak about any players as it's not fair to talk about other teams' players and it's not fair to Birmingham fans to start talking about speculation. "The only time I will say anything official is when we've got a player across the line."
