McDermott explains Zigic omission

Nikola Zigic's omission from Birmingham's matchday 18 against Bolton on Tuesday was purely down to tactical reasons, says Terry McDermott.

The Serbian striker, heavily linked with a summer move back to Spain before eventually staying put at St Andrew's, found himself completely out of Lee Clark's plans for the first time this season. Zigic has found the net twice despite just one Championship start, coming off the bench in his only other two appearances to bag goals against Charlton and Sheffield Wednesday.

But assistant manager McDermott insisted his height was not required in the 2-1 win over Bolton as Blues went for Leroy Lita and Marlon King in attack with Peter Lovenkrands and Akwasi Asante among the substitutes. "Ziggy just wasn't selected for the game - the manager decided to go with a little bit more pace," McDermott said. "It was just a tactical thing. He is fit. It was just the manager's choice."
