Stephen Carr will go from retirement to playing in the Premier League in under a year after agreeing a new contract with promoted Birmingham City on Friday. Carr, 32, who retired after leaving Newcastle United at the end of last season, started playing with Birmingham on a short-term deal in February and impressed boss Alex McLeish so much he offered him a two-year contract. Birmingham won automatic promotion to the Premier League from the Championship earlier this month and McLeish said: 'He wants to stay and has done well. If he shows the hunger and quality he did when he came in here, obviously the quality is going to count in the Premier League.'
