The Blues defender sustained a groin injury during Tuesday night's 1-1 draw at Ipwich and will not play any further part in Blues' remaining two league games or in the play-off's should Blues manage to secure a top six finish.
"Unfortunately Steve will miss the rest of the season which is a really big blow for us and more so for him, "Hughton has said.
"He's been a mainstay and a rock for us all season and he's built up a great relationship with Curtis Davies at the back.
"He's an experienced professional and has been around a long time and knows that injuries are part and parcel of the game.
"He is very disappointed but he also has faith with whoever comes in."
