Blues must spend big on Benitez

Blues are believed to have tabled a bid of £6.2million plus another £3 million in add-ons for the 23-year-old - making a potential £9.2million swoop easily their most expensive ever. But City manager Alex McLeish faces competition in the race for Benitez with other Premier League clubs, including one in the top six, also reported to be interested. Benitez is currently playing for Mexican top-flight side Santos Laguna and if he decides to come to St Andrew's, the move would better Birmingham's previous record buy. Five years ago, they agreed a package worth £6.2million with Liverpool for Emile Heskey. But the club's relegation in 2006 meant City never paid the full amount as the striker moved to Wigan. Santos Laguna are thought to be ready to make a decision on the player's future by Wednesday. Birmingham have also checked on Polish striker Robert Lewandowksi of Lech Poznan. The 20-year-old is rated at around £5million but any further interest could depend on the Benitez deal.
