Blues duo hoping for European run

Birmingham heroes Chris Wood and David Murphy are ready to start dreaming of further European success following their dramatic win away to Club Brugge in Belgium.

Chris Hughton's side came from behind to beat their hosts 2-1 through Murphy's equaliser and Wood's later winner, securing a victory which put them top of Europa League Group H with six points from three games.

"This competition is very important for me and the club," said New Zealander Wood who scored the winner in the 10th minute of stoppage time. "We came here and played against a very strong side."

He added: "The fans turned out and were in good voice. There were over 5,000 people cheering us on and that is something that we have to take on. I scored that goal for them. They came out in force and showed their presence in the stadium.

"They've been brilliant the whole way, even when we went 1-0 down they never stopped cheering us on and it was great to have them over here. This is a great competition for us to thrive in."

City had trailed to Joseph Akpala's third-minute opener after being caught cold. But the Carling Cup holders equalised through left-back Murphy before the half-hour mark and, as both sides went for the win, it was Wood who met Marlon King's low cross to delight the away contingent.

"It's gut-wrenching to go behind to an early goal but that's something that we have to get on with," said Wood. "There will always be times in football when you go behind and this shows that we have a lot of character. We came back and showed our strength."

Like Wood, Murphy is relishing the European campaign as Blues continue to exceed expectations.

He said: "I don't think you could write it better, could you?

"To score so late in front of all your fans just capped a great evening and it puts us in a great position to actually go and do something in the competition.
