Birmingham manager Alex McLeish could make several changes for the televised Carling Cup second round home match against Rochdale. The Scot could give several youngsters or fringe players the opportunity to make an impression against the npower League Two side.

One player who definitely will not figure is veteran striker Kevin Phillips, who could be out for another month with a thigh problem picked up before the start of the campaign. Rochdale boss Keith Hill is boosted by the inclusion of new signing Josh Thompson for the trip.

The Celtic defender, 19, has moved to Spotland on a season-long loan after falling out of favour with new Hoops manager Neil Lennon at Parkhead. Thompson did not receive clearance in time to face Colchester at the weekend but is included in the squad to face Alex McLeish's side.

Ambitious Dale boss Hill, who guided the club to promotion last season, is relishing the prospect of facing top-flight opposition. Hill - who has no injury or suspension concerns - said: "This is my opportunity to pit my wits against a Premiership manager and a Premiership side."
