Birmingham City have emerged as front runners to land former Rangers and Newcastle United winger Peter Lovenkrands. Lovenkrands,29, who has experience playing under Birmingham boss Alex McLeish atRangers, is a free agent after leaving St James' Park at the end of last  season. Newcastle are keen to re-sign the Danish international but Birmingham are now the favourites for his signature. During his time in Scotland, Lovenkrands won two SPL titles, three Scottish League Cups and one Scottish Cup. He also played in the Rangers side that reached the last 16 of the Champions League. Meanwhile, McLeish fears that Birmingham could miss the chance to land Sporting Gijon midfielder Michel. Birmingham have been chasing the 23-year-old Spaniard for several weeks and McLeish said: 'We are still trying. 'I think the board have done all that they have been asked to do, maybe it's paperwork and other things. 'What I do know is that we are running out of time and a lot of other teams have stolen a march on us with some high activity this last week.
