Birmingham on brink of sealing late move for Spartak Moscow defender Martin Jiranek

Birmingham are closing in on a deal to sign Spartak Moscow defender Martin Jiranek, Sportsmail understands.

The 31-year-old's contract with the Russian club expires in December and Blues boss Alex McLeish is thought to be keen on adding the versatile defender to his squad before the transfer window shuts.

Should the 6ft 3in defender sign for the midlands outfit before tomorrow's 6pm deadline, he will provide competition for centre backs Roger Johnson, Scott Dann and Liam Ridgewell, although Czech international Jiranek can also play at full-back.

McLeish admitted earlier today that he is keen to add another player to his squad after seeing deals for Moussa Dembele and Charles N'Zogbia fail to materialise.

'We are trying our best to bring people in to improve the quality of the squad,' McLeish told the club's website.

'The near misses I've had with Dembele, N'Zogbia and others, that's unfortunate when you see how good these players are but there are other ones out there and we'll try and add somebody before 6 o'clock on Tuesday.'
