Birmingham owner David Sullivan claims his club beat off interest from some of the world's top sides to sign Christian Benitez and has indicated that there are more exciting deals to come. Sullivan also thinks that he has shoved the words of critics - who doubted Birmingham's ambitions - back down their throats. He had stated that Blues would bring in a raft of new signings, whichwas questioned in some quarters, but feels the club is delivering. Manager Alex McLeish has publicly admitted that new faces are needed - particularly in midfield - if Birmingham are to stand a chance of Barclays Premier League survival next season. 'It is an extremely exciting capture,' said Sullivan reflecting on the move for Ecuador striker Benitez. Lee Bowyer 'Believe me, some of the biggest clubs in the world were keeping tabs on Benitez so it is a great coup to us and I hope he proves to Blues fans just how good he is. 'We also sealed a deal to bring Lee Bowyer to Blues on a two-year deal. He showed quality at the back end of last season and played his part in helping us gain promotion back to the Premier League. 'Bowyer's signing was our seventh of the season. Anyone who scoffed when we said a few weeks ago that we were looking to bring in ten new faces to bolster the squad may now be forced to admit that we meant what we said. 'Rest assured, the work is not done yet,' Sullivan added. 'There is still plenty to do to make sure we are ready for the challenge of the Premier League so it's all hands to the pump for the big kick-off in August.'
