Birmingham hold De la Cruz talks

Birmingham City are in talks with defender Ulises de la Cruz over extending his stay at St Andrews. The 35-year-old former Aston Villa defender had signed a one-month deal with the Blues, which ended on 2 April. He has made only one appearance for Birmingham, coming off the bench in their win over Doncaster on 14 March. "I'm still speaking to Ulises because he's undecided about going back to Ecuador," Birmingham boss Alex McLeish told his club's website. "He still harbours ambitions of getting to the 2010 World Cup finals. "I know that may be a long shot for Ecuador in terms of their position in the South American qualifying campaign. "But the other campaign he is targeting is the Copa America. "These are the issues I am talking to him about." McLeish initially signed De la Cruz, who has made 98 appearances for Ecuador, when he was in charge of Scottish side Hibernian in 2001.
