Birmingham are set to make an improved £9m offer for Wigan's Charles N'Zogbia and are also keen on £2m PSV Eindhoven leftback Carlos Salcido.

Wigan rejected Birmingham's last offer of £8.2m, saying they wanted closer to £10m plus an unnamed player. Now Alex McLeish is primed to return - pipping Sunderland and Marseille.

Wigan, who signed former Burnley captain Steven Caldwell, 29, on a free yesterday, are ready to sell as they look to strengthen for a relegation battle and with only a week left of the transfer window.

Manager Roberto Martinez held talks with chairman Dave Whelan yesterday. He has sold striker Jason Scotland to Ipswich and wants former West Ham striker Guillermo Franco. He also wanted Salcido, 30, as did Liverpool, but McLeish stepped in.

Meanwhile, Birmingham owner Carson Yeung has promised to continue funding the club.
