Spaniard Julen Lopetegui has signed a three-year deal to coach Portuguese giants FC Porto, club president Jorge Pinto da Costa confirmed on Tuesday.

The 47-year-old former Real Madrid and Barcelona goalkeeper started his coaching career in 2003 at Rayo Vallecano.

Lopetegui was hired by the Spanish football federation to coach the national under-19 side, with whom he won the Euro 2011 tournament, before being promoted to the under-21s, claiming another Euro victory in 2013.

Porto have had a disappointing season and will finish third in the league.

Previous coach Paulo Fonseca was sacked in March and replaced by Luis Castro on an interim basis.
